The Michigan Home Energy Rebates(opens in new tab)
Program Pathways to MiHER are split into two primary rebate tracks:
- Home Efficiency Rebates (HER / HOMES): Offers up to $20,000 for whole-home retrofits like insulation, air sealing, and upgraded HVAC systems based on modeled energy savings.
- Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates (HEAR): Offers up to $14,000 for efficient electric technologies such as heat pumps, water heaters, electric stoves, clothes dryers, and electrical panel/wiring upgrades.
Eligibility & Income Limits, Who qualifies: Michigan homeowners and renters (renters need landlord approval and coordination) using the home as a primary residence.
- Low-to-Moderate Income Priority: Households earning at or below 80% of their county’s Area Median Income (AMI) can qualify to have up to 100% of project costs covered.
- Standard Rebates: Households earning 81% to 150% of AMI qualify for rebates covering up to 50% of costs
Key Rules, Approved Contractors: All work must be completed by a MiHER-registered, approved contractor; self-installations do not qualify.
- Pre-Approval Required: You must apply and receive program approval before starting any work or purchasing equipment.
- Direct-to-Contractor: Rebates are typically paid directly to the participating contractor, lowering your out-of-pocket invoice directly.
